Festival fans are joining artists and crew in a concerted effort to secure the Government support the event industry needs to get through 2021 – kicking off tonight with an evening of live-streams and party games.
The festival and events industry is crying out for a Government-backed insurance scheme, similar to what already exists in other European countries. With the vaccine roll-out continuing at pace, there’s a strong possibility it’ll be safe to hold festivals and other large events this summer, but without such an insurance scheme, organisers can’t afford to wait that long before deciding whether to cancel.
As their usual cancellation insurance doesn’t cover coronavirus, the losses incurred calling off an event at short notice could bankrupt most organisers. Right now, they’re “rapidly approaching the point of determination”, which means many will either be cancelling or starting to pay deposits to artists and suppliers in the weeks ahead.
Unlike previous campaigns, #WeNeedEvents was started and is led by festival fans and ticketholders: “With the potential loss of much loved UK events looming on the near horizon, now the ticketholders are adding their voices to the cause in a last-ditch attempt to highlight what this industry brings to the table economically and culturally, and why it needs to be protected.”
Tonight’s launch will be an explosion of noise and creativity across the internet, with #WeNeedEvents founder Alice Austin saying: “Our hub will be hosting live music and pre-recorded performances and entertainment, showcasing talent from across the UK.
“Alongside this, we are running an easy & fun photo hashtag challenge (#WeNeedEvents) on social media, and encourage both ticket holders and industry staff to participate. This will highlight how much we miss and need events.”
