Leigh indie-pop quartet Lottery Winners are fast becoming one of the UK’s favourite bands, and today they unveil the second taste of their upcoming new album KOKO out 21st February 2025, with new single ‘Superpower’.
‘Superpower’ is the most uplifting, celebratory songs about panic attacks, ADHD and being expelled from school you’ll ever hear. There’s even a dance routine.
The rousing opening to the album follows frontman Thom Rylance’s long journey towards a diagnosis with ADHD, the process he went through to obtain this, and a heartwarming description of ADHD’s benefits.
Released at the culmination of ADHD Awareness Month, the band have been partnering with the charity which helped Thom with this diagnosis, the ADHD Foundation, on social media to raise awareness of ADHD.
On the track and its intended effect, Thom says: “I’m disappointed it’s taken so long to get my diagnosis. If a child has to wait five years too, that’s the whole of their time at high school. If one person gets diagnosed and feels better about who they are because Superpower raises awareness, I’d be very happy.”
The band will also share the music video for ‘Superpower’ at 6pm tonight (Thursday 24th October).
Shot in Thom’s final high school, Bedford High School in Leigh, after being expelled from his previous schools due to issues around his undiagnosed ADHD. The creative and at points hilarious video also features a cast mainly made up of ADHD sufferers.
A band who have the rare mix of having songs as infectious as their personalities, Lottery Winners announced their new album KOKO (which stands for ‘Keep On Keeping On’) in September, with lead single ‘You Again’ featuring Reverend & The Makers.
Premiered by BBC Radio 2’s Sara Cox, and becoming a firm favourite of BBC Radio 2’s Zoe Ball, the song even got the attention of Robbie Williams who was listening along, whilst Metro have touted the band as the potential saviours to the long-standing question of British guitar music’s lack of prominence in the charts.
KOKO is produced by Tristan Ivemy and also features guest vocalists Chad Kroeger of Nickelback, Rick Witter of Shed Seven, and Frank Turner, who makes his third consecutive appearance on a Lottery Winners album.
Lottery Winners’ third album, Anxiety Replacement Therapy, reached No. 1 in May 2023, and marked a culmination of success achieved in the old-school way. Beating major artists like The National, Nines, and Jessie Ware to the top, the Leigh quartet’s success was a surprise to many—though not to their devoted fanbase, who have long supported one of Britain’s most extravagantly entertaining and hard-working bands.
After playing to over half a million people in 2024 alone, KOKO is a captivating album is poised to expand their fanbase even more.
Lottery Winners also recently shared details of a headline tour in support of KOKO alongside previously announced dates supporting Frank Turner, Jamie Webster and Blossoms, as well as shows in Australia and Europe, plus a trio of Manchester Academy dates in December to round off a remarkable year for the band.
The headline tour will begin in February in Bristol, before calling at London’s O2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire, Glasgow, Leeds and Liverpool before finishing in Birmingham.
