Your summer festival planning checklist

Festival season is nearly here. It’s the perfect chance to enjoy live music, great food, the company of friends and hopefully some sunshine! Whether you’re heading to one of the large UK festivals or a smaller event, you’ll want to make the most of your experience – and that takes some preparation.

From packing to travel to safety, there’s a lot to consider. But here’s a practical guide to help you prepare, minimise stress and have fun.

Packing essentials

The first step is to make sure you have everything you’ll need. Focus on items that will keep you comfortable and prepared for the unpredictable nature of outdoor festivals.

Start with the basics: durable footwear. Comfortable boots or wellies are ideal if you need to get around in muddy fields. A pair of comfortable trainers may be a good backup.

Clothing should be weather-appropriate, but also versatile. A light, waterproof jacket can protect you from sudden downpours, while layers allow you to adjust to the changing weather. It’s also a good idea to pack a hat and sun cream to keep yourself protected in sunny weather.

A portable phone charger is another necessity. You don’t want to be running out of battery when you’re trying to stay in contact with friends.

Also, don’t forget essentials like your tickets, ID and a copy of any important medical information. Bring a small, secure bag to carry these items around, and consider leaving any non-essential valuables at home.

Travel and accommodation

The earlier you book any transport or accommodation, the better. If you’re camping at the festival, get your tent and camping gear ready ahead of time. Don’t skimp on quality, especially when it comes to sleeping bags and mats. You’ll want something comfortable to sleep on after a long day on your feet. If you’re sharing lifts or borrowing a car for the journey, short term car insurance can be an easy way to stay covered only for the days you’re travelling.

If you’re staying off-site, plan your journey so you don’t end up rushing on the day and missing key acts. Factor in travel times and consider how to get from your accommodation to the festival grounds – this might be walking, bus or taxi.

If you’re driving, remember to check parking arrangements and make sure your car insurance is up to date before the trip. Check your vehicle, including tyres, windscreen wash, lights and brakes before you leave too. There’s no point leaving anything to chance!

Health and safety

You’re there to have fun, but nothing should get in the way of your health and safety. Staying hydrated is crucial, especially when you’re active and spending hours outside. Carry a reusable water bottle and refill it regularly at designated water points.

Make sure to eat well too. Festival food is always tempting, but try to eat some healthier options like fruit and veg throughout the event to help keep your energy levels up.

In case of emergencies, it’s always worth knowing where the festival’s medical facilities are. Try to find out where the nearest first aid point is, too, in case you need it for something less urgent.

Enjoying yourself

Things don’t always go as planned, so don’t be afraid to be flexible.  It’s all part of the fun. Whether it’s a schedule change or unexpected weather, a positive attitude should help you make the most of the experience.

Relax, embrace the adventure, and try to enjoy every moment.
