Liverpool siblings Yee Loi drop dark pop anthem ‘Down In The Bunker’

Liverpool sibling punk trio Yee Loi have released their new single ‘Down In The Bunker’, a gothic-horror flavoured track built around an existential goth, a small-town bully and a dead uncle hidden in a basement.

The song grew out of a real-life family holiday to Italy, where the band, made up of siblings Rose, Matilda and Don Don, stayed in an apartment they joked smelled like there was a body hidden in the walls. Matilda said: “We were in Italy for our mum’s birthday, staying in this apartment that just smelled absolutely terrible. We started joking that there was a dead body hidden away in the basement walls…and that gradually became ‘Down In The Bunker’.”

The band’s name, Yee Loi, is Cantonese for “two girls”, and their songwriting process is a genuinely collaborative, wall-banging affair carried out at their family home. Rose explained: “We are completely separated by a bedroom wall at home. If Matilda gets an idea for the lyrics or I get an idea for a riff or a melody, we just shout ‘Come on, then!’ through the plaster and start writing. Half the time it’s midnight and someone is knocking on the ceiling telling us to stop, but that’s exactly how our songs come together”.

A music video accompanies the release, built around a DIY punk aesthetic that sees the band’s heads placed on doll bodies, leaving only their facial expressions free to react to the song. Their younger sister also appears in the video as a “little goth”, with the band calling the whole thing a “sibling show”.

Yee Loi have already built festival and touring credentials, having supported post-punk icon Adam Ant on a run of UK dates in late 2025. York Calling praised the trio’s set as the “sharpest opening set of the month”, adding that “they leave the stage like they’ve robbed a bank and legged it.”

The band will return to the road this October, this time supporting Transvision Vamp on an extensive UK arena and venue tour spanning fifteen dates.
