Panama Tribal Gathering: The 18-day festival with over 60 tribes

This weekend marks the launch of an incredible festival called Tribal Gathering.

As the name suggests, the event goes far beyond music.

Every year over 60 different tribes from 30 countries come together to celebrate their love for music and share the knowledge of their cultures.

This year’s event is taking place from the 15th of February to the 4th of March. Yes, that’s right. 18 whole days of music, arts, teachings, tribal bands, music projects, international acts, circus and burlesque shows, over 200 workshops, wellness practices, shamanic realms and more!

The event takes place on the north coast of Panama. A country connecting the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, providing an atmosphere like no other for its festival-goers.

Flights from the UK are £400 and above per person.

In terms of the tickets, there are four types of passes that you can buy; Dance Celebration ($200), Indigenous Immersive ($300), Tribal Dance ($300) and Full Tribal Gathering ($350).

You can find more information on their website.

Whilst it may be too late for you to book and organise an 18-day adventure in one of the craziest locations you’ve ever come across, it’s definitely one for the bucket-list.

For those of you lucky enough to go to this event, it’s important to mention the following:

  • British nationals don’t need a visa, and most European airlines offer direct and indirect flights to Panama.
  • Check the Home Office travel advice.
  • The easiest way to get to the resort from Panama Tocumen Airport is via the shuttle bus – this is $60 one way and takes about three hours.
  • The festival operates a cashless payment system – nearest ATM is 2 hours away from the gathering!
  • Limited WiFi is available for a cost .
  • There is no phone service.
  • Camping is free, however there are tents and camping equipment that you can buy in advance. Glam Camping options also available.

In the words of the organisers:

Tribal Gathering encourages cultural awareness by bringing indigenous communities together and presenting cultural diversities rarely seen anywhere in world…They represent the beating heart of Tribal Gathering showing that while we are one we are also everything.

Live entertainment will include an array of actors, acrobats, stilt walkers, jugglers, fire-spinners, hula-hoopers and sword-eaters.

All working together to provide you with the most memorable experiences.

Various workshops and well-being practices will also take place, these will include but not be limited to the following:

  • Acupressure
  • Aqua Therapy

Even though the festival doesn’t offer any babysitting or childcare services, Tribal Gathering is a child-friendly event, making it even more significant than it already is.

A number of arts, crafts and hands-on workshops have been designed by the festival to encourage children and their parents to get involved.

If you’re considering going to this event next year, you may be interested in volunteering.

This does not provide you with free entry but allows you to give back to the community of GeoParadise; a charitable organisation that uses its funds to support the hundreds of tribes that participate in the event.
