If you’ve left it late to stock up on cans for Glastonbury next week, you’ll probably be heading to a supermarket pretty soon in search of a few crates.
Unlike many other festivals, Glastonbury has no internal arena or check points, meaning you can take as many drinks as you can carry from your campsite to the main stages. While there are over a hundred bars should you fancy a cold pint, you can save loads of money taking your own supply. With a decent cool bag and a few trips to the onsite Co-op for ice, you could even drink them cold.
Here’s a rundown of the best deals on big packs of beer and cider available in the shops this weekend. Remember, you can’t take glass bottles into Glasto, so we’re only looking at cans here. Tesco and Sainsbury’s prices given here are Clubcard and Nectar prices and all the deals are for 440ml cans unless stated.
Cheapest lagers for Glastonbury

Below 4% ABV
Sadly, the cheapest lagers are the weakest, with Carlsberg now just 3.4% ABV and Fosters down to 3.7% ABV.
You’ll get 18 Carlsberg for £10 in Aldi, Asda, Tesco and Morrisons, or 18 Fosters for £11 in Morrisons, Aldi and Tesco.
4% and over
Aldi are currently offering 18 cans of Stella for £11.99 at 4.6% ABV.
Alternatively, £12 gets you 18 cans of Carling in Aldi, Asda, Tesco and Sainsbury’s, which is currently 4% ABV.
You can also get the 18 packs of Stella for £13 in Asda and Tesco.
‘Premium’ brands
Sainsbury’s 2 for £22 seems to be the best deal around at the moment. You can get 15 packs of 5% Heineken and 4.5% Budweiser on this, and you can mix and match with loads of other stuff (in smaller packs) like Guinness, Camden Pale and even Kopparberg Strawberry & Lime Cider.
Madri is also on the Sainsbury’s 2 for £22 deal as 10x 440ml, but if you’re going out to buy the stuff, it’s slightly cheaper pretty much everywhere else. Asda have them on 2 for £20, Aldi for £10.49, Morrisons on 2 for £21 and Tesco for £11 Clubcard price.
Birra Moretti is on the same multibuy deals as Madri in Asda and Morrisons, but they’re smaller 330ml cans and you’ll still only get 10 in each crate.
Supermarket own brand
I’ll have to admit I’ve not tried any of these myself, but I can’t say we’ve looked at the cheapest deals without giving them a mention. That’s because the supermarket own brand lagers often come in cheaper than the best big crate deals, such as Sainsbury’s 4% Original Crown Lager coming in at £2.25 for four cans. That makes it slightly cheaper than the 18 Carling for £12, though personally I’d go to Aldi and get an 18 pack of stronger Stella for the same price.
