Traffic management at Glastonbury 2025 has been officially declared the “most successful to date,” according to a new scrutiny report from Somerset Council. [pdf link]
The glowing review stands in stark contrast to historic struggles, noting that the 210,000-capacity event saw minimal disruption to local communities.
Success is attributed to “careful planning” and the deployment of advanced Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS). These included real-time CCTV, ANPR cameras, and variable message signs that allowed organizers to respond rapidly to changing road conditions.
Kelly Sumner, chair of Pilton Parish Council, echoed the positive sentiment. “In our wrap-up meeting, villagers’ comments were overwhelmingly supportive of how well the traffic was managed for the 2025 festival,” she said.
Beyond the smooth roads, the report highlights significant financial efficiencies for the local authority. Somerset Council revealed it spent £24,800 on monitoring the event this year—a total saving of £8,500 (25%) compared to 2024.
These savings were achieved primarily by streamlining officer shifts and removing the council-run shuttle bus service. The report confirms that despite the reduced spend, the council fully met its statutory obligations, covering everything from food safety checks to noise monitoring.
While the festival operations were largely seamless, the debrief noted a few specific challenges. An “amber” heat alert was issued for the Monday egress, requiring a multi-agency response to keep departing crowds safe as temperatures soared.
Noise complaints were also raised, though not necessarily caused by the festival itself. The council received reports of disturbance from a “third-party offsite campsite” not operated by Glastonbury Festival Events Ltd (GFEL), as well as complaints regarding helicopter noise.
The report clarified that the council has no jurisdiction over airspace, which falls under the Civil Aviation Authority. However, it noted that organizers have offered to establish a working group to minimize campsite disturbance in future years.
The report also looks ahead, referencing a new “members protocol” proposed for implementation at the “2027 event”. This aligns with the long-established plan that 2026 will be a fallow year, allowing the farmland at Worthy Farm to recover.
