Beyoncé introduces gender-neutral toilets on latest world tour

Beyonce tour

Renowned pop music star Beyoncé commenced her ‘Renaissance World Tour‘ in Stockholm, Sweden, on Wednesday night. The tour, marking her first solo venture since 2016, has made headlines not only for her on-stage performances but also due to an off-stage feature that came to light via social media: gender-neutral toilets at the concert venues.

A Twitter account named “RENAISSANCE Updates” posted a photograph of a makeshift sign indicating a gender-neutral toilet. The sign was seemingly attached over traditional signage with duct tape. The caption read, “Beyonce’s team is making all of the bathrooms Gender Neutral on the #RENAISSANCEWorldTour.” It is important to note, however, that the claim that all toilets at the tour’s venues will be gender-neutral remains unverified.

Beyoncé’s tour will come to the UK later this month and tickets remain available for a number of cities on Ticketmaster, including Cardiff, Edinburgh and London.

This move by Beyoncé’s team towards gender-neutral facilities, if implemented across all venues, could be viewed as a significant step. The tour, scheduled to span numerous large arenas globally, will also pass through several US states that have recently introduced laws or policies limiting gender-affirming care for those under 18. These include Tennessee, Kentucky, Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Missouri, among others.

Back in December 2019, Beyoncé and Adidas announced a collaboration on a new gender-neutral collection.

The “Renaissance World Tour” is Beyoncé’s latest undertaking since the “On the Run II Tour” with Jay-Z in 2018. In recent performances, she sang “Be Alive” at the 2022 Academy Awards and held a private concert in Dubai in January 2023. Throughout this tour, fans will experience Beyoncé’s three-act Renaissance project.

The 2023 Renaissance World Tour, masterminded by Parkwood Entertainment and promoted by Live Nation, commenced tonight, at the Friends Arena in Stockholm. The tour is set to traverse multiple cities in Europe and North America, including notable stops in Paris, London, Toronto, and Los Angeles.

Moreover, Beyoncé’s influence will be felt offstage as well, through her philanthropic initiative, BeyGOOD, which she founded in 2013. Throughout the tour, BeyGOOD will continue its mission of promoting economic equity by supporting organizations that aid marginalised and underserved communities. These organizations provide access to scholarships, internships leading to job placement, and resources that foster entrepreneurship.

In specific cities during the tour, BeyGOOD will bolster entrepreneurs via Black Parade Route luncheons. These events aim to celebrate small business owners by awarding grant opportunities and providing a range of services with global partners to enhance business sustainability. A total of one thousand small businesses will receive support, amounting to a total commitment of one million dollars.

On the educational front, BeyGOOD will distribute scholarship funds to colleges and universities in ten different cities along the tour. Each institution will receive one hundred thousand dollars and will be responsible for selecting the student recipients. The total scholarship commitment from BeyGOOD during the “Renaissance World Tour” will also be one million dollars.

Collaborating with Beyoncé and the BeyGOOD Foundation, corporate partners Citi and Verizon will purchase 100 tickets combined in each US market for distribution to local community initiatives. Additionally, Tiffany & Co., a known collaborator with Beyoncé, has been named the official jeweller of the “Renaissance World Tour.” The company is renowned for its commitment to conducting its business responsibly, prioritizing diversity and inclusion, and positively impacting the communities in which it operates.
