Sydney melodic hardcore collective Bloom has released their highly anticipated sophomore album The Light We Chase via Pure Noise Records. The new record, which features recent singles “Out Of Reach”, “Tongue Tied”, and “Withered”, marks the band’s most visceral collection to date, exploring themes of emotional turmoil, relationship breakdowns, and struggles with trust and hopelessness.
Alongside the album release, Bloom has unveiled a brand new music video for “Keep You (ft. Pat Miranda)”, which can be viewed now. The Light We Chase represents a significant evolution for the band, featuring their first ever credited guest vocals from a diverse lineup including Void Of Vision’s Jack Bergin, Yours Truly’s Mikaila Delgado, and Movements’ Patrick Miranda.
Drummer Jack Van Vliet describes the album as an oxymoron, explaining the concept behind its title. “You can’t catch light in your hands, and you can’t have darkness without the light casting its shadow. We all have an idea of something perfect. A memory, a vision of the future, a light at the end of the tunnel. The Light We Chase is that perfection. The sublime. The taste of something good. Our widest exploration of how far metalcore can be pushed and shaped, this album is lyrically diverse as it is instrumentally.”
The album was created in collaboration with producer Sam Bassal, who has previously worked with Ocean Grove, Void Of Vision, and Thornhill. Remarkably, the entire album was written and finished within just a few short weeks, capturing a raw and immediate creative energy. This release marks Bloom’s first full-length with Pure Noise Records after signing with the label in 2024, following their debut album Maybe In Another Life, which was released earlier in 2024.
Vocalist Jono Hawkey reflects on the band’s growth between albums. “I feel like we learned a lot from releasing album one, as well as the music that’s come before that. We’re now at a point where we’re very confident in our sound, and we’re willing to take more risks.” The Light We Chase showcases this confidence through its diverse sonic palette, from thunderous tracks like “Forget Me Not” and “Withered” to acoustic tenderness on “Tongue Tied” and infectious nostalgia on “Keep You”.
Bloom is currently touring across Europe and the UK as support for Thornhill and Ocean Grove, with their final show scheduled for November 9th at London’s O2 Islington Academy. Following the European run, the band will head to North America to support Silverstein on the 25 Years of Noise Tour, which also features Thursday and Free Throw. The band will make their US headline debut with a special album release show at Chicago’s Subterranean on November 13th.
Formed in 2017, Bloom has built a reputation for their open-veined approach to melodic hardcore, balancing catharsis with rage and despair. The five-piece consists of vocalist Jono Hawkey, guitarists Jarod McLaren and Oliver Butler, bassist Andrew Martin, and drummer Jack Van Vliet. Their commanding live performances have seen them share stages with Silverstein in Europe, Chelsea Grin and Currents in Australia, Miss May I, Polaris, and Make Them Suffer, while also completing sold-out headline shows including their debut Japanese tour where Tokyo sold out entirely.
