Cloud Nothings have announced a new album, What Kind of Hell Did You Survive?, out on 29th January 2027 via Pure Noise Records. The Cleveland band have also shared lead single Death Keeps Me Alive, with a video, and will tour the UK and Europe through November.
The nine song set is their most flat out aggressive record yet. It leans into metal, with blown out riffs and heavy drumming, while keeping the hooks that have carried the band for 17 years. It follows 2024’s Final Summer, which drew praise from Pitchfork, NPR, Stereogum, Rolling Stone, Paste, BrooklynVegan, Uproxx and FLOOD Magazine.
They open the run at Simple Things in Bristol on 7th November, where they are already on the completed Simple Things line-up for the festival’s 12th edition. Tickets for that Saturday are still on sale, with earlier tiers sold out.
Vocalist and guitarist Dylan Baldi says Death Keeps Me Alive is written “from the point of view of a lurking evil power that never gets fully defeated in the world and feeds off of death, war and hate, which is kind of a fun generically ‘metal’ thing to sing about.” He hopes listeners “recognise that this is going to be a new version of Cloud Nothings that didn’t really have a precedent prior to this recording.”
The single is streaming now, including on Spotify. Pre-orders for the album are up. Seth Manchester, whose credits include Battles, Lightning Bolt and The Body, produced and engineered the record.
“The album is our attempt to pay homage to the heavy rock music we’ve been listening to over the last few years,” Baldi says. “Some pretty direct and popular musical influences on the tracks are Queens of the Stone Age, Motorhead, Earth, and Electric Wizard. We were feeling a little pigeonholed in the indie rock world and wanted to make a change in our sound that revealed a different facet of our interests and abilities.”
He also points to political metal and hardcore as a lyrical influence. “The songs deal with cruel governments, the importance of community, and occasionally a general rage at the state of the world.”
