Belfast’s controversial rap trio Kneecap yesterday released their highly anticipated new single ‘Sayōnara’, a collaboration with legendary electronic music producer Paul Hartnoll of Orbital. The track, which made its explosive debut during their headline-grabbing Glastonbury 2025 performance, is now available on all digital platforms.
The journey of ‘Sayōnara’ from festival stage to official release perfectly captures Kneecap’s trajectory through Britain’s festival circuit this summer. The track was first performed during their highly controversial Glastonbury set on the West Holts stage, where the Belfast trio drew one of the festival’s largest crowds despite calls from politicians, including Prime Minister Keir Starmer, to ban their performance.
Mo Chara, Móglaí Bap, and DJ Próvaí have been including the track in their festival sets throughout the summer, with the band noting on social media: “We’ve seen yis going mad for this one in mosh pits all summer”. An exclusive double A-sided 12″ vinyl featuring ‘Sayōnara’ alongside their summer single ‘THE RECAP’ has already sold out in its green pressing. The green vinyl was made available exclusively via Kneecap’s WhatsApp group and sold out within seconds, while the black variant remains available for pre-order ahead of its October 10th release.
The single arrives with a striking music video directed by Finn Keenan and starring Jamie-Lee O’Donnell from the hit series Derry Girls. O’Donnell praised the project, describing it as “a massive banger of a track” with an “intense yet euphoric video”.
The release comes as Kneecap continues to navigate the political controversy that has surrounded them since their pro-Palestinian stance at Coachella in April. Their Glastonbury performance, which featured Palestinian flags and political statements, drew tens of thousands of supporters despite the political pressure. Police investigations into their performance were later dropped due to insufficient evidence.
The timing of ‘Sayōnara’s’ release capitalizes on the momentum built during their festival appearances, transforming a live crowd-pleaser into a commercial success.
