UPDATE 30th May: Queens of the Stone Age have now been confirmed as the Sunday night headliner for the Other Stage. This was revealed as part of the full line-up and set times annoucement earlier today.
When the Guardian revealed “the first 55 artists” from this summer’s Glastonbury line-up at 9am this morning, Queens of the Stone Age featured in the list.
Around 40 minutes later, when the Glastonbury line-up poster was released on social media, eagle-eyed fans were quick to notice Queens of the Stone Age were strangely absent. Not long after, the Guardian article was amended to remove the band.
Sometime after that, presumably following a panicked back-and-forth between Guardian and Glasto headquarters, an explanation was added to the bottom of the article. The Guardian said: “The number of announced artists was reduced from 55 to 54 after an artist had been wrongly included in the initial lineup by Glastonbury organisers.”
The correction doesn’t name the band removed and the Guardian article now has no mention of Queens of the Stone Age. The now-incorrect list continues to circulate on social media and in the national press. The band were widely rumoured to appear at last year’s Glastonbury and previously played the festival in 2002 and 2011.
Today’s announcement marks both the earliest the main line-up poster has been revealed and the fewest artists which it has confirmed – so it’s highly likely there are plenty more big names still to come. Fans are already speculating Queens of the Stone Age could be set for a future announcement.
The official line-up poster, shown below, confirms previously rumoured artists including Becky Hill and Royal Blood. Lizzo will play the Pyramid Stage before Guns N’ Roses on Saturday while Lil Nas X will play before Elton John’s final-ever UK show on the Sunday night. Cat Stevens will play the Sunday afternoon ‘Legends Slot’ and be immediately followed by Blondie, effectively creating a double Legends slot.
In other news confirmed today, The John Peel Stage will be renamed Woodsies. Organisers say this has nothing to do with a petition which called for the stage to be renamed because John Peel married a 15-year-old – instead, it’s part of a drive to name stages after the fields they stand in.
Tickets sold out within minutes when they went on sale back in November but resales of cancelled tickets are expected later this spring. A raffle is currently taking place to raise money for the DEC’s Turkey-Syria earthquake appeal with 10 pairs of tickets up for grabs, each with a “once-in-a-lifetime” Glastonbury experience attached like watching a set from the Pyramid Stage viewing platform. Other competitions for Glasto tickets include Brothers Cider promotional packs and one soon to be announced by Vodafone.
Also confirmed this week, Vodafone will replace EE as Glastonbury’s official communications partner this year – which means they’ll be providing loads of temporary masts to make sure your internet connection still works on-site. From past experience when EE was the official partner, their network worked really well throughout the festival with only a few minor hiccups in the biggest Pyramid Stage crowds. Vodafone was also quite good, whereas 3 and o2 barely worked at Glasto.
Glastonbury Festival 2023 will take place from Wednesday 21st to Sunday 25th June at Worthy Farm, Pilton.
