The Prodigy have pulled out of headlining Boomtown on Sunday night after band member Maxim suffered a back injury.
Despite being rumoured to appear pretty much every year, the long-awaited set would have been their first appearance at the festival.
Since 2022, Boomtown have kept the line-up under wraps until days before the festival starts – but made an exception for The Prodigy announcing them at the start of July.
Boomtown organisers have said they’re trying to rearrange Prodigy for next year’s event and working to update Sunday night’s line-up. Any updates will be posted in the Woov app for the festival.
In a statement posted on social media this afternoon, the band said: “The Prodigy have unfortunately been forced to cancel their upcoming headline festival performances at Dreambeach (ES) and Boomtown (UK) under doctor’s orders, as Maxim recovers from a temporary back injury.
“This isn’t a decision the band take lightly and they apologise to all fans who are travelling to these shows. We will update everyone on his progress and future shows as soon as possible.”
Boomtown organisers said: “Friends, There is no easy way to say this. We have just been made aware The Prodigy can no longer play at Boomtown 2023.
“Maxim has suffered a back injury and is unable to perform following medical advice. We and the band are gutted and know you will be feeling the same. We are now working hard to bring this iconic band to Grand Central next year at Boomtown 2024. Until then we send Maxim our love and wish him a smooth recovery.
“This news brings a shift to our Sunday programming, rest assured, we’re working on this. Please check the woov app for updates. Thank you for your understanding. Biggest love and respect, Boomtown.”
Yesterday, we heard rumours were circulating the Boomtown campsites that The Prodigy would have to pull out due to a covid infection. We hoped this wasn’t true, as it’s not uncommon for false ‘headliner cancelled’ rumours to spread in the early days of a festival. Sadly, it seems while the reason was incorrect, this time the rumours were true.
