With a star-studded line-up featuring the likes of Metallica, Slipknot, Bring Me The Horizon, and Architects, strategy is key. Mark your can’t-miss acts, but leave room for serendipity – discovering a new favourite is a rite of passage at Download and your favourite band might just be one you haven’t ever heard of yet.
2. Ensuring Pitch Perfect Camping at Download 2023
Here’s the deal: you can’t camp in the arena. But you can be smart about it. Choose a spot close to the arena entrance, pack waterproof gear (this is the UK, after all), and bring a torch for those late-night tent-finding missions.
Bring a tent, generally slightly bigger than you think you need (three man for two people, four for three ect), a 2 season sleeping bag and a roll mat. The roll mat is not optional, without it you will freeze.
Ensure that nothing is touching the side of your tent when it rains- if the inner and outer skin touch water will seep through
3. How to Dance in the Rain (or Shine)
Embrace the unpredictable British weather with a waterproof jacket and welly boots, and don’t underestimate the power of sunscreen. Because let’s face it, festival fun stops when you’re soaked, freezing, or sunburnt.
One solution to the wet but warm weather that often hits Download is to strip down rather than dress up. Wearing a t-shirt and shorts can be a great choice in the rain, provided you keep moving.
4. Feasting like a Rockstar
While festival food stalls can be a tempting (and expensive) treat, packing your own snacks and even meals for the campsite, is a savvy move. Bacon can be fantastic on friday morning but don’t expect it to last the whole weekend. Generally dried food is best. Think carefully about tins though, they are bloody heavy.
You can bring your own booze too, but will search for alcohol when you are entering the arena – the festival makes a lot of its money from its bars. Some people do manage to sneak booze in using various creative methods, but this is a risky activity.
5. Navigating the Notorious Toilets
There’s no sugar-coating it: festival toilets are a battlefield. Download is typically better than most but it still makes sense to arm yourself with toilet paper, hand sanitizer, and a can-do attitude.
One thing thats worth pointing out is that during breaks between bands the toilets can get super busy, It can be a good idea to go during a band you don’t like, so you don’t miss the start of one you do.
6. Should you join the Night Owls?
Nighttime at Download is far from sleepy. With silent discos, buzzing bars, and thrilling carnivals, the fun doesn’t stop when the sun goes down. Just remember, patience is a virtue when it comes to the long queues for many of the activties.
One option is to go wandering the campsite looking for loud, active groups to befriend. Be nice, and you might make friends for life.
7. Mosh Like a Pro
When popular bands like Architects and Slipknot hit the stage, the mosh pits will be wild. Know your mosh etiquette before you enter: help anyone who falls to their feet asap, keep an eye out for injuries, secure your belongings, and step out if things get too intense.
Moshing can be amazing fun, and is suprisingly safe (if you consider only getting minor injuries safe). Download is a great place to try it out for the first time, with really friendly crowds, and the perfect lineup.
8. Dive into the Community Spirit
There’s more to Download than just music. It’s about the friendships formed in the campsites, the shared beers, and the collective love for music.
At my first download, I was being fed buckfast by scottish strangers before I even got off the shuttle bus. At my second, I learned the rules of baggle (an amazing game involving throwing a bag of wine and yelling “baggle”). At my third, I met five different people wearing the same hat as me (an orange bucket hat with googley eyes).
Embrace it, be a part of it, and make memories that last a lifetime.
9. Charge Up and Stay Connected
Want to share your epic festival moments on social media?
Remember to pack a portable charger! A phone will only last one day. 20,000mAh (milliamp hours) should be plenty to get you through the festival. Another option is to opt for hiring a locker with a charging facility, though this can cost as much as a basic battery bank, and means leaving your phone behind.
Note that at large festivals like Download, phone signal and wifi tends to be very weak due to the vast number of people present overloading the local cell network. Generally, access is easier around 6am, before everyone else gets up, but at other times of the day you will struggle to send a text, let alone upload a photo.
10. Stay Healthy, Stay Rocking
Pack a basic first aid kit, stay hydrated, and remember, there are medical teams on site should you need them. Trust me when I say they are lovely. I’ve needed their help before.
Remember to bring any medicines you may need, as well as a stash of simple drugs like simple drugs like immodium, paracetamol and ibuprofen. You might well need them to battle a hangover, endure a moshing injury, or help you avoid a dodgy burger ruining your festival.
11. Respect Your Rockin’ Home
Remember, the festival grounds are our home for the duration of Download. It normally becomes an absoute tip by the end, with tents and heaps of rubbish left behind, so please try to keep it clean, respect the site, and make Download Festival 2023 the best one yet.
