With the first 16 music acts in the line-up revealed, Roskilde Festival is now setting course towards next year’s big youth culture gathering in Denmark.

Danish non-profit festival Roskilde Festival aims to ensure a more diverse future, and common to the 16 young music acts in today’s announcement is that they all represent progression.

Whether this involves rebelling against existing societal norms or exploring one’s own identity, the programme emphasises finding new paths in life through art and culture.

Roskilde Festival’s Head of Programme, Anders Wahrén, explains: “Roskilde Festival must be synonymous with curiosity and diversity. Whether it comes down to cultural activism or musical adventurousness, the artists in today’s announcement set a course for the future. It’s essential for us as a festival to emphasise that art can play a part in showing us the way forward.”

First concerts in Denmark

Today’s announcement includes gospel explosion Florence Adooni, who performes for the first time outside her home country of Ghana. Alternative Korean pop group LEENALCHI, which is also putting on their first Danish show at Roskilde Festival.

Among the top names on the year’s line-up, you will find Nigerian superstar Burna Boy, who has brought afrobeats to remote corners and entirely new audiences thanks to hits like “Last Last” and “On the Low”. When he steps out onto the iconic Orange Stage for his late-night show, it will be Burna Boy’s first appearance at the festival.

Roskilde Festival’s Head of Programme, Anders Wahrén, explains: “We want to create a place where there is room for diversity, and we present artists who are progressive. This is the place to go to experience music that you would not normally find at large festivals, side by side with the world’s biggest names in pop.”

Queer-pop and civil rights

The 2023 edition of Roskilde Festival offers a reunion with the French pop hero Christine and the Queens, who will introduce his new alias, Redcar, when stepping onto the Orange Stage with an immaculately choreographed show.

Similarly, festival-goers can look forward to intelligent queer-pop from Japanese-British artist Rina Sawayama, who already blew away both music critics and the audience at this year’s festival with her pulsating beats and grandiose choruses.

It will certainly be an energetic, bodily, and heart-felt experience when Florida rapper Denzel Curry demonstrates his superior vocal technique, with songs spanning the struggle for civil rights in America and battles with his own inner demons.
