The online Glasto-verse is abuzz this morning after a tweet from Liam Gallagher revived the perennial rumours of a reformed Oasis playing at Glastonbury. He said a “f**king massive” announcement is imminent.
The legendary band broke up in 2009 with brothers Noel and Liam both pursuing successful solo careers – though in recent years, Liam has repeatedly claimed they will reunite. In February 2021, he said “It’s gonna happen” before adding two days later: “Bring it on, like I’ve said a million times before I’m ready to go. I’d piss an Oasis gig standing on my head, the little fella knows it as well, that’s why he’s scared to share the stage with me as I’d OWN it”.
This morning, Liam said: “Big announcement tmoz and I mean BIG bigger than my nose, bigger than rkids, rite said Fred fucking massive so stay tuned LG x”
Rumours of Oasis reforming for Glastonbury surface every year. Both Liam and Noel were at Glastonbury 2017, but despite both performing ‘Don’t Look Back in Anger,’ they did so independently. Liam Gallagher performed a Saturday afternoon set to an absolutely packed Other Stage, whilst Noel was part of a Q&A session before an Oasis documentary screening.
Then, ahead of the most recent Glastonbury in 2019, Liam addressed Noel in a tweet suggesting they get the “big O” back together. This sent the rumour mill into overdrive, with Ladbrokes slashing the odds of Oasis headlining to just 5/2.
However, Oasis did not reform and did not appear at Glastonbury that year.
The Manchester band have yet to play together since falling out in 2009, having previously played the Glasto’s Pyramid Stage in 2004. The row supposedly began after Liam threw a plum at his brother’s head.
They have traded insults publicly since 2009, frequently in their live performances and on social media.
Whilst the rumour mill is certainly at full speed this morning, it’s likely the Glastonbury 2022 headliners have been booked by the organisers for some time now – and we’re simply waiting for the public announcement, whether Oasis reform or not.
And as any rumoured Oasis reunion is long from being confirmed, Glasto organisers are unlikely to be waiting on the brothers to sort out their spat before confirming their headliners. Though in 2014, Michael Eavis told the Mirror: “I do talk to Noel and Liam a lot, wouldn’t it be marvellous for them to relaunch at Glastonbury now Liam has split from Beady Eye?”
If Oasis were to reform and play a massive reunion show in the short term future, it would likely be their own single event. A few years ago, the official Manchester City Twitter account replied to Liam’s tweet, suggesting a homecoming gig at City’s Etihad Stadium.
As it stands, only Billie Eilish and Diana Ross have been officially confirmed by Glastonbury organisers as part of the line-up.
However, a few other artists have self-confirmed their place, including Crowded House, Craig Charles, Papaphone and Black Dyke Band. The latter will open the Pyramid Stage on Sunday morning.
Billie Eilish will be the youngest ever Pyramid Stage headliner, at 20 years old when she performs on the Friday night. Diana Ross will take the Pyramid’s Sunday afternoon ‘Legends Slot’.
Harry Styles has also been rumoured to appear – as has George Ezra.
The full line-up is usually revealed towards the end of May, just a few weeks before the festival, although more artists are often confirmed from February.
Glastonbury 2022 will take place from Wednesday 22nd to Sunday 26th June at Worthy Farm near Pilton, Somerset. Tickets sold out ahead of the cancelled 2020 festival, though a resale of cancelled tickets will take place before the event.
