Bristol’s newest venue – AREA 404 – is offering double the pleasure as the city welcomes in 2020 with not one but two events; kicking things off with the New Year’s Eve spectacular, followed by New Year’s Day all-dayer.
The multi-space venue in St Philips, which opened with four sold-out nights across late October and early November, is run by the team behind Boomtown, the UK’s leading immersive festival.
Those launch nights took the inventive spirit of the festival and distilled them into a dystopian industrial landscape where ticket holders were invited into an indoor party the likes of which Bristol has never seen before.
That theme, with guests taking on the roles of survivors of a nuclear event and actors mingling with the crowds, will be extended into New Year’s Eve, with ticket holders encouraged to dress for the occasion.

New Year’s Eve
Entertaining ticket holders on New Year’s Eve will be legendary reggae DJ Rodigan, a multiple award-winning artist who has graced radio stations across the UK and beyond. Also helping AREA 404 guests celebrate the start of 2020 will be a DJ set from French trip-hop act Chinese Man, known for their electrifying sets which blend hip hop, funk, dub, jazz and reggae.
Complementing the headliners will be AREA 404’s multiple rooms with techno, DnB, reggae and disco on offer with a fresh sound around each corner.
Area 404’s New Year’s Eve event will finish at 4am and for normal venues that would be the end of the partying – but this is no ordinary venue and while many head to bed to sleep the day away, a completely new event will be firing up.
New Year’s Day
From 2pm on January 1st the music will start up again, but this time with a very different flavour.
With a DJ set from synth stars Hot Chip headlining, the promoters of iconic London LGBTQ+ night and festival collective Little Gay Brother are joining forces with Bristol’s own LGBTQ+ event Bitch, Please! for what might be the most glamorous ever New Year’s Day event in the city. Dancefloor fillers Viva La Disco will also be there to ensure the day (and night) comes with an infectious soundtrack.
House, disco, techno and cabaret will be the themes of the New Year’s Day event, which will finish at 12midnight.
More than 10,000 people got to experience AREA 404’s two launch weekends, which brought the theatrical magic of Boomtown back to the city where the festival was created 11 years ago – creating Bristol’s biggest venue in the process.
