The first of 16 huge trains running direct from London Paddington to Glastonbury today has arrived at Castle Cary station nearly an hour late. Passengers heading to the festival will board shuttle buses at Castle Cary to travel the final six miles to the Worthy Farm site.
The train was due to leave London at 07:03 this morning but departed around half an hour late. It was scheduled to arrive at Castle Cary by 08:36 this morning, after calling at Reading, Pewsey and Westbury along the way, but was further delayed en route and eventually arrived at 09:41, just over an hour late.
While the delay may be frustrating, any passengers on the train are in for a few free pints if they claim their ‘Delay Repay’ compensation. Because the delay was over an hour, anyone with a single ticket is eligible for a full refund, and anyone with a return ticket will get a 50% refund. GWR are running more than 60 trains between Paddington and Castle Cary, with most of them 9 or 10 coaches long. Additional services have been added to the regular timetable. This means they’ll provide over 26,000 seats to the festival from London between today and Friday. Capacity has also been boosted for those heading to the festival from elsewhere, including extra trains running from Taunton.
Due to the high demand, anyone travelling on the route from London is required to make a reservation.
Castle Cary station manager Ben Scott explains: “Glastonbury Festival is one of the busiest events on the GWR network and we want to get everyone here in a safe and affordable manner.
“To offer the very best experience for all of our passengers, that means limiting what can and cannot be brought on board and providing people with the best information we can to let them take advantage of less busy trains.
“Reserving a seat allows us to see which trains are the busiest, so we can let people know on our website where there is more availability.
“While we have bottled water on site, given the weather forecast I would also recommend people remember their sunscreen and carry water with them.”
Staff will be on hand to assist customers travelling to the festival across the GWR network.
