Roskilde 2020 is back as a DIY festival!

Roskilde Orange Stage

If life gives you lemons, make it Orange. This year, Roskilde Festival invites participants all around the world to take part in the non-profit event at home, combining – as always – having a party AND supporting those less fortunate than yourself.

The big events this summer are cancelled but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t enjoy the festival community through the music, art and food with your friends. On Saturday 4th July, what would have been the final day of Roskilde Festival 2020, the Danish non-profit event encourages participants from all around the world to create their own festival at home. Just like the main festival, tickets and merchandise will be available for ‘Roskilde Festival – do it yourself’, with profits given in full to initiatives that give young people a voice and strengthen young people’s communities.

Roskilde Festival is organised by Roskilde Festival Charity Society and is created every year by 30,000 volunteers. All profits from the festival are donated to humanitarian, non-profit and cultural work for the benefit of children and young people in particular. Since the beginning of the 70s, Roskilde Festival has donated over EUR 55 million.

This year would have marked the 50th edition of Roskilde Festival and like 49 times before, thousands of people had been looking forward to storming into the Roskilde festival site to gather in front of the famous Orange Stage, start up a party in the numerous camps, to volunteer, and take part in the countless things that make Roskilde Festival an experience without comparison. As you know, that is not possible this year, but it does not mean that there cannot be a festival – or something similar. The participants are now encouraged to build it themselves at home.

Saturday 4 July – what should have been the culminating closing day of this year’s festival – marks the opening day of ‘Roskilde Festival – do it yourself’. Here, the participants can pitch a tent in their living room, play beer bowling in the backyard, create the perfect playlist, be inspired or provoked by art – and share it all with the other participants online. Just like we all share experiences at the festival every year.

In the weeks leading up to the event, participants can find inspiration from Roskilde Festival’s many guides to music, food, art and activism so that all the self-made festivals will have a common orange glow. Roskilde Festival will be sharing the best fan-created content on their social channels.

Buy tickets to your own festival

When you buy a ticket to Roskilde Festival and participate on-site, you support the opportunities and communities of children and young people every year. The festival is essentially a fundraising event where all the profits are donated to charitable causes.

In a similar fashion, it is possible to buy donation tickets and merchandise for ‘Roskilde Festival – do it yourself’ just as you can acquire a festival wristband for the special event.

The profits from the ticket sales will be donated in full to initiatives that give young people a voice and strengthen young people’s communities.

Roskilde Festival’s spokeswoman, Christina Bilde, says: “Unfortunately, we cannot meet up at the festival site this year. Fortunately, the festival community thrives in so many other ways. In recent months, we have seen tremendous support, and many people have announced that they plan to celebrate the festival. It is absolutely fundamental to us that we can be a platform for such communities. So, we hope that many people will come together and enjoy music, food, art and the Roskilde community while supporting young people’s voices and opportunities.”
