With Glastonbury Festival just a few months away, rumours the Spice Girls will feature on this year’s line-up are starting to gather pace.
They were widely rumoured to appear at Glasto’s 50th-anniversary edition in June 2020 after Mel B said Victoria Beckham (Posh Spice) might return to the band for a Glastonbury appearance. The other four Spice Girls played a sold-out tour in 2019 without Victoria. However, coronavirus forced the festival to cancel in both 2020 and 2021, with it returning for the first time this summer.
Speaking on The Jonathan Ross Show, Mel B said “I’m always gonna say yes” to Glastonbury and that “all five” Spice Girls have talked about it. The interview is available to watch below with the Glasto-chat starting at about 1:40.
Mel C has since made similar comments, including on ITV’s Lorraine show in July 2021, when she said: “I know Mrs Beckham would love to do Glastonbury, It’s been rumoured a lot, but we do constantly talk about getting back on stage because the shows in 2019 were incredible. We’d love to do it again, once the world allows.”
Back in August 2019, Mel B told Event Magazine: “Victoria is Victoria. She didn’t want to do it. But my plan is for all five of us to do Glastonbury next year for the 50th anniversary. I’m in the process of persuading Victoria to do it. And I will make it happen.”
Then, when Johnathan Ross asked if performing at Glastonbury means “Victoria as well?”, Mel said: “I hope so. She hasn’t mentioned it for the sake of just mentioning it.”
Mel then admitted Victoria hasn’t mentioned this to her directly, but that her mum told Mel’s mum at a ‘Spice Girls’ mums’ garden party’.
Sky Bet have previously offered odds of 6/1 for the Spice Girls to headline the Pyramid Stage, which made the band the bookie’s 11th favourite. Betting has since been suspended following the announcement of Billie Eilish as the first confirmed headliner for 2022.
Mel B, also known as Scary Spice and real name Melanie Brown, played in recent tours with Geri Horner (Ginger Spice), Mel C / Melanie Chisholm (Sporty Spice) and Emma Bunton (Baby Spice).
The 13 dates across the UK and Ireland in 2019 were the group’s first tour without Victoria and their first performances since they played at London Olympics closing ceremony in 2012. The tour attracted a cumulative attendance of nearly 700,000 people.
As it stands, only Billie Eilish and Diana Ross have been officially confirmed by Glastonbury organisers as part of the line-up.
However, a few other artists have self-confirmed their place, including Crowded House, Craig Charles, Papaphone and Black Dyke Band. The latter will open the Pyramid Stage on Sunday morning.
Billie Eilish will be the youngest ever Pyramid Stage headliner, at 20 years old when she performs on the Friday night. Diana Ross will take the Pyramid’s Sunday afternoon ‘Legends Slot’.
Harry Styles has also been rumoured to appear – as are Oasis, Supergrass, The Chemical Brothers and George Ezra.
The full line-up is usually revealed towards the end of May, just a few weeks before the festival, although more artists are often confirmed from February.
Glastonbury 2022 will take place from Wednesday 22nd to Sunday 26th June at Worthy Farm near Pilton, Somerset. Tickets sold out ahead of the cancelled 2020 festival, though a resale of cancelled tickets will take place before the event.
