The rumours of Paul McCartney headling Glastonbury this summer had already reached breaking point over the last two weeks – and this week, it appears he’s given the game away with a cryptic tweet many are taking as confirmation.
In a play on the Wordle score tweets that are now commonplace, Paul said “Wordle 121 25/6” – and while it wasn’t Wordle 121 this week and you don’t get 25 guesses, it was 121 days until the 25th June, which happens to be the Saturday of Glastonbury 2022.
He also added six green squares, and while Wordle answers are only five letters, ‘GLASTO’ happens to be six.
The former Beatle was already top of the Glastonbury rumours list after being confirmed as a headliner in 2020 before covid forced the event to be cancelled. With Glasto 2021 meeting the same fate, many expected Paul McCartney to be among the artists rolled over to the 2022 line-up.
The rumours intensified over the last couple of weeks as we got the first confirmation that Paul will be actively touring this summer, with a run of American shows concluding on June 16th, just a couple of weeks before Glastonbury.
And it’s not the first time he’s dropped a cryptic tweet ahead of being officially confirmed. Ahead of Glastonbury 2020, he tweeted an image of Philip Glass, Emma Stone and Chuck Berry without comment.
Glastonbury organiser Emily Eavis recently confirmed on Twitter that the initial line-up poster will be published in March, with area line-ups to follow – before the complete line-up with timings is released in June, just before the festival. We’re also expecting another official artist confirmation before the end of February.
Some have speculated Paul McCartney would have been officially confirmed this week but the announcement may have been delayed following Vladamir Putin’s illegal invasion of Ukraine, though we’ll likely never know if this was a factor or if the announcement was ever scheduled for this week.
Paul will be 80 by the time Glastonbury comes around, which would make him the oldest ever Pyramid Stage headliner. He’s expected to perform the day after Billie Eilish headlines. Aged 20 at the time, she’ll be the youngest ever Pyramid headliner.
As it stands, only Billie Eilish, Diana Ross, Little Simz, The Strays and R.A.E. have been officially confirmed by Glastonbury organisers as part of the line-up – with 2020 Emerging Talent Competiton runners-up ADIMAL and Matilda Mann also expected to appear.
Organiser Emily Eavis has revealed the main Glastonbury 2022 line-up poster will be released in March.
However, a few other artists have self-confirmed their place, including Crowded House, Craig Charles, Confidence Man, Papaphone, Courtney Barnett and Black Dyke Band. The latter will open the Pyramid Stage on Sunday morning.
Billie Eilish will be the youngest ever Pyramid Stage headliner, at 20 years old when she performs on the Friday night. Diana Ross will take the Pyramid’s Sunday afternoon ‘Legends Slot’.
Harry Styles has also been rumoured to appear – as have The Chemical Brothers, The Lathums, George Ezra and Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds.
The full line-up is usually revealed towards the end of May, just a few weeks before the festival, although more artists are often confirmed from February.
Glastonbury 2022 will take place from Wednesday 22nd to Sunday 26th June at Worthy Farm near Pilton, Somerset. Tickets sold out ahead of the cancelled 2020 festival, though a resale of cancelled tickets will take place before the event.
