Primal Scream have been using their social media channels to drop hints they could be playing at Glastonbury when the festival returns this June.
Last week, the band tweeted a video of their performance at Glastonbury 2003, prompting a fan to ask: “Nevermind that, will you be doing it this year?” – Primal Scream quickly responded with “Let’s see…” and then liked a tweet from another fan reading: “See you in Halifax and Glastonbury”.
They were confirmed as part of the Glastonbury 2020 line-up before coronavirus forced its cancellation. With the following edition in 2021 also cancelled, it’s possible many of the artists set to appear in 2020 will have their booking ‘rolled over’ to 2022.
Primal Scream have a long history of Glasto’ appearances, with their Pyramid Stage slot in 2009, shown above, featuring in NME’s list of ‘20 sets that shook Glastonbury‘. With a slot between Brian Wilson and Bassment Jaxx, lead singer Bobby Gillespie opened the set by telling the crowd: “We’re a punk rock band and you’re a bunch of f**king hippies.”
They previously headlined the Pyramid Stage in 1998 and headlined the Other Stage in 2003. They also headlined the Pyramid in 2011 and played another Pyramid set on 2013. They also played the Other Stage way back in 1992 when it was known as the NME Stage.
As it stands, only Billie Eilish and Diana Ross have been officially confirmed by Glastonbury organisers as part of the line-up.
However, a few other artists have self-confirmed their place, including Crowded House, Craig Charles, Papaphone and Black Dyke Band. The latter will open the Pyramid Stage on Sunday morning.
Billie Eilish will be the youngest ever Pyramid Stage headliner, at 20 years old when she performs on the Friday night. Diana Ross will take the Pyramid’s Sunday afternoon ‘Legends Slot’.
Harry Styles has also been rumoured to appear – as are Oasis, Supergrass, The Chemical Brothers, Wolf Alice and George Ezra.
The full line-up is usually revealed towards the end of May, just a few weeks before the festival, although more artists are often confirmed from February.
Glastonbury 2022 will take place from Wednesday 22nd to Sunday 26th June at Worthy Farm near Pilton, Somerset. Tickets sold out ahead of the cancelled 2020 festival, though a resale of cancelled tickets will take place before the event.
