The Co-op’s massive pop-up supermarket, which first appeared at Glastonbury in 2019, will return to the festival this summer.
The store proved incredibly popular on its debut appearance when it was located on the edge of Oxylers campsite, near the Other Stage. It was open from 7am to 3am and constantly restocked with food, drink, toiletries, medicines and other essentials – including sun cream as hundreds of thousands of attendees baked in over 30°C heat.
The Co-op have told TheFestivals the official list of the nine events they’ll be at this summer, and the good news is they’ve confirmed they’re coming back to Glastonbury. A spokesperson told us: “We are excited to be back in the fields again for a full season of festivals!”
As in 2019, contractual obligations mean Glasto is one of three festivals where the Co-op won’t be selling alcohol this year – though a wide range of soft drinks, mixers and ice will still be available. As Glastonbury have banned plastic bottles from being sold on-site, the Co-op won’t stock these either, with drinks sold in infinitely-recyclable aluminium cans.
Ahead of their first appearance in 2019, the Co-op said its partnership with Glastonbury Festival was “founded in a shared ethos of co-operation, community support, ethical values and campaigning to make meaningful change” and they also committed to open a permanent village shop in nearby Pilton.
At the time, Glastonbury founder Michael Eavis said: “When I was a small boy there were three shops in this village. My earliest memories of going to the shop were to buy one penny packets of sherbet! Since then, one by one, the shops have closed and for several years we’ve had no shops at all.
“But now, thankfully we’ve managed to persuade the Co-op people to make a pledge and commit to trying to provide our marvellous village with a model village shop. We’re SO lucky and my enthusiasm is shared right across the village!”
Just over a year later in July 2020, the Somerset County Gazette reported Michael Eavis had opened Pilton’s new permanent Co-op store, which runs entirely on renewable energy. He said: “It’s such a terrific thing to get these two most important parts of village life back again.
“Thanks so much for all of those who put in the spadework to make this happen bang in the middle of this wonderful village of ours.”
“We managed to resurrect the Post Office in the building and, thanks to the Co-op, it will remain there for the good of the village for years to come.”
Pilton had been without a permanent Post Office since 2011 until the new Co-op store was opened following the partnership with Glastonbury Festival.
In February 2021, Worthy Farm Reserve Cheddar, made using milk from the dairy herd that live on Glastonbury’s site, was launched. It remains exclusively available at Co-op stores and buying some is one way you could win tickets to Glastonbury 2022.
As it stands, only Billie Eilish, Diana Ross, Little Simz, The Strays and R.A.E. have been officially confirmed by Glastonbury organisers as part of the line-up – with 2020 Emerging Talent Competiton runners-up ADIMAL and Matilda Mann also expected to appear.
Organiser Emily Eavis has revealed the main Glastonbury 2022 line-up poster will be released in March.
However, a few other artists have self-confirmed their place, including Crowded House, Craig Charles, Confidence Man, Papaphone, Courtney Barnett and Black Dyke Band. The latter will open the Pyramid Stage on Sunday morning.
Billie Eilish will be the youngest ever Pyramid Stage headliner, at 20 years old when she performs on the Friday night. Diana Ross will take the Pyramid’s Sunday afternoon ‘Legends Slot’.
Harry Styles has also been rumoured to appear – as have Supergrass, The Chemical Brothers, Wolf Alice, The Lathums, George Ezra and Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds.
The full line-up is usually revealed towards the end of May, just a few weeks before the festival, although more artists are often confirmed from February.
Glastonbury 2022 will take place from Wednesday 22nd to Sunday 26th June at Worthy Farm near Pilton, Somerset. Tickets sold out ahead of the cancelled 2020 festival, though a resale of cancelled tickets will take place before the event.
